DMSO for Hemorrhoids

While it may not be a popular topic to talk about at the water cooler, if you’ve ever experienced hemorrhoids, then you know the discomfort and will seek relief as quickly as possible. 

Hemorrhoids are swollen veins found either inside the anus (internal hemorrhoids) or under the skin around the anus (external hemorrhoids).  While more common in men, pregnant women or elderly people also experience this unpleasant inflammation.  Bleeding is sometimes present and along with the swelling they can sometimes itch. 

In extreme cases, doctors have recommended surgical options, which include hemorrhoid removal or hemorrhoid stapling procedures for larger hemorrhoids that may be both internal and external hemorrhoids.  However, we wanted to share with you some other options that individuals have found relief with that are non-invasive and can be done in the comfort of your own home. 

A sitz bath or warm water offers relief from the discomfort of hemorrhoids.  Cold compresses or ice packs help to reduce the inflammation and when wiping after a trip to the toilet, many find it more tolerable to use moist towelettes rather than dry toilet paper. 

Additionally there are topical creams and ointments that contain numbing agent contain hydrocortisone and witch hazel.  Another option in alleviating pain is analgesics such as aspirin or ibuprofen. 

If you are bold and willing to endure slight temporary discomfort in an effort to overcome hemorrhoids then individuals have been known to take cayenne pepper internally, in combination with a tea.  This is thought to address the hemorrhoids by working from the inside out.

While all of these aforementioned options are viable, one of our favorite and more frequently discussed topical remedies is a homemade mixture consisting of DMSO, potassium iodide, and aloe vera.  Since DMSO has natural anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties, this should not really come as a surprise.  Add to it the anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties of aloe vera that also offers a soothing gel and natural barrier against the mineral salt of potassium iodide, which is recognized in helping break down scar tissue and you have a great homemade topical solution.  In addition to these three ingredients, some people opt to add cocoa butter, an old folk remedy for burns, wounds and dry lips.  This natural alternative has been said to bring complete relief from hemorrhoids in a period of six days.
